Japan Tax-Free Refund Calculator (2026)

A tax-free refund is the consumption tax stripped out of the price you paid — about 9.09% of a 10% tax-included price, not 10% of it. Food and drink at the reduced 8% rate refund less. Note that this scheme is for short-term visitors; if you hold a residence status in Japan, you do not qualify.

Estimate the consumption tax refund for a visiting friend or family member. Japan residents themselves don’t qualify for tax-free shopping.

How to Use

  1. Enter the total purchase amount, tax included.
  2. Select whether the items are taxed at the standard rate (10%) or the reduced rate (8%, food & beverages).
  3. Click Calculate to see the tax-excluded price and the estimated refund.

How the calculation works

The refund is the tax-included price minus the tax-excluded price.

Price excluding tax = tax-included price ÷ (1 + rate)
Estimated refund = tax-included price − tax-excluded price

Why it is not simply 10% of the price

Japanese shelf prices already include consumption tax, so the refund is the tax inside the price, not a percentage added on top.

StepFormula
Pre-tax priceTax-included price ÷ (1 + rate)
RefundTax-included price − pre-tax price

At the 10% rate that works out to roughly 9.09% of what you handed over. The calculator does the division for you.

8% or 10%?

The reduced 8% rate covers food and beverages, including takeout. But alcohol and eating in are taxed at the standard 10%. The same drink from the same counter is 8% if you carry it out and 10% if you sit down with it.

The rules change in November 2026

Until now, shops deducted the tax at the register. From November 2026, you pay the tax-included price and claim the refund at the airport on departure, after customs verifies your documents and the goods.

Practically, this means allow extra time at the airport — and keep refund-eligible purchases in your carry-on. If they are already checked in, they cannot be inspected.

Why residents are excluded

The exemption exists because the goods are expected to leave Japan. If you live here on a residence status, that premise does not hold. Buying on behalf of a visiting friend or relative is also a problem, since the purchase must match the passport presented.
